How It Works

The Target

GABA-A receptors and enkephalin metabolism in the central nervous system. Selank is a synthetic analogue of the immune peptide tuftsin with anxiolytic properties.

The Mechanism

Increases expression of GABA-A receptor subunits (alpha1, alpha2, beta2), enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission — the same system targeted by benzodiazepines but through gene expression rather than direct receptor binding. Also stabilizes enkephalins (endogenous opioid peptides) by inhibiting their enzymatic breakdown, prolonging their calming effects.

Why It Matters

Clinical studies showed comparable anxiolytic effects to phenazepam (a benzodiazepine) without sedation, dependency, or withdrawal effects. The gene-expression mechanism rather than direct receptor agonism may explain the cleaner side-effect profile.
